Vivid Sydney 2022

After two years of false starts and lockdowns, VIVID returned to Sydney in May 2022 with a festival of lights, music and ideas. The best VIVID light show yet?

Loved:

  • The walk via the Lightwalk Map. You could see most of the lights in one night (though perhaps better in two), with a walk all the way from the Opera House to Broadway.

  • The colour and the use of the water as canvas. Clear favourite was Ephemeral Oceanic (Zara Pasfield &Renzo B. Larriviere). This “bubble bath” looked fabulous even by day. (Sadly, not the case for many of the installations.)

  • The creativity and innovation: lasers, and 3D video projections just keep getting better.

  • The delight on the faces of so many young children, taking it all in

Not so much:

  • The crowds and queues, especially on public transport

  • The ugly fencing and barricades around the light installations especially in the light of day, (though much-improved on 2019 Vivid).

  • Some patchy dark stretches between the displays
